About SafeCare Incorporated
SafeCare works with people who have been impacted by child sexual abuse – those who have been harmed, those who have harmed, those who may harm and those who care for them.
The highly effective SafeCare Method of Child Sexual Abuse Prevention addresses issues for people who have sexually offended against a child or are at risk of doing so, charges of Child Exploitation Material (CEM) and internet crime. It also provides ongoing support and counselling for family members. The program is designed to cover victim empathy training, childhood issues, relapse prevention strategies and positive sexuality. Internet and child pornography offending are also dealt with as a preventive intervention. The current 20-30 sessions are a distillation of the SafeCare 40-week group treatment program and the research into problematic internet use (PIU) as described in Elliott & Beech (2009) Understanding online child pornography use: Applying sexual offence theory to internet offenders.
Participants with similar and specific problem behaviours, such as viewing or producing CEM, are assessed, screened for motivation level and attitudes to treatment and accepted into the group program to guard the program milieu and confidentiality. Within a positive therapeutic environment, facilitators utilise prevailing research and treatment philosophies across a range of treatment modalities including psychodynamic/attachment theory/developmental and cognitive behavioural approaches and assist individuals to generalise new learning into their daily lives.
HISTORY
SafeCare Incorporated provided a family counselling service for all family members where child sexual abuse had occurred or was at risk of occurring between 1989 and 2009. During this time and over 700 families were treated and supported. Following its closure, due to continuing high demand, a group of psychologists started offering a shorter version of the men’s group treatment program in the their private practices. For over another decade this treatment program as well as the associated support for families has proved to be vital for those affected and their families. There have been 2 -5 groups running each year since that time. SafeCare is anticipating restarting its full suite of child sexual abuse treatment and support programs in 2023.
