New Book - The SafeCare Story
TREATMENT KEY TO PREVENTING CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE
A new book published by SafeCare demonstrates that effective treatment of child sexual offenders is critical to preventing child sexual abuse in our community.
“Effective treatment for child sexual offenders and others who engage with Child Exploitation Material is the only way to protect the most vulnerable people in our community – our children!” author and long-term clinical psychologist Christabel Chamarette said ahead of the launch of the book this coming weekend.
“Our community is rightly concerned about the growing incidents of child sexual abuse and the spread of child exploitation material facilitated by the Internet.
“SafeCare’s work with over 800 offenders over the last 30 years clearly demonstrates the power of treatment on these people as well as enabling support for their family.
“Over 90% of child sexual offending occurs within the family context and, while we continue to demonise the lone sexual offender, we miss the overwhelming evidence that families are being torn apart every day where effective treatment could minimise the damage to them as well as prevent further offending,” Ms Chamarette said.
The book – The SafeCare Story – Breaking the Cycle of Child Sexual Abuse – tracks the evolution of SafeCare Incorporated., which, between 1989 and 2009, offered a community-based treatment of all members of families where child sexual abuse had occurred or was a risk, through the eyes of its Clinical Psychologist, Christabel Chamarette.
Part history, part programme manual, it is a fascinating, educative and insightful exploration of child sexual abuse and the reasons people offend. It describes SafeCare’s innovative and successful approach to treating offenders while providing support for their families.
Ms Chamarette said, “This book is a long-overdue opportunity for readers to gain insight into the transformative power of effective treatment, the psychological underpinnings of why people abuse and how we, as a community, should adopt a much more positive outcomes-based approach to stopping child sexual abuse.” ENDS
