The Preventing Child Sexual Abuse website and guide have been prepared by a group of Western Australian Clinical Psychologists, who have deep skills and experience in preventing child sexual abuse (CSA), as a contribution to the goal of reducing the incidence of adults (mostly men) sexually abusing children.
They have published it with a view to the guide being shared widely throughout the community. They hope it will be a valuable tool in preventing CSA by placing responsibility for prevention back onto adults rather than on children.
In the short term, responsibility for reducing the incidence of abuse is passed onto offenders and prospective offenders. In the longer term, prevention will be favoured by an understanding within the community that improved parenting practices are necessary to reduce the risk of children becoming adolescent and/or adult offenders.
This website offers information to promote understanding of the main factors that contribute to the sexual victimisation of children so that more people who are at risk of offending, or who may have started offending, will be encouraged to stop, and to seek professional help and support. The guide also offers suggestions on what we must do as a community to reduce the incidence of CSA in the longer term.
